Eating Well Daily

[ad_1]

America is one of the most obese nations in the world. You can hardly throw a stick anywhere without it landing on a fast-food restaurants. Most of us hardly take the time to count the amount of calories we take in daily, let alone the amount of calories we burn. Children are exceptionally well at mimicking their adult counterparts. Meaning, obese parents often have children who end up becoming obese as well. However, by making a few small changes in our diet, we can eliminate the amount of bad calories we take in, maximize the amount of nutrition we put into our bodies, we can start getting on the right track for eating well daily.

EATING WELL FOR BREAKFAST

For some people, their breakfast may consist of pork sausages, chicken and waffles, fried eggs, etc. These meals are often packed with calories and fats, and is a poor way to start off your day. Consuming all of those unnecessary calories end up doing more harm than good in the process. As an alternative, one should look into incorporating fresh fruit into their meals such as oranges, bananas, strawberries, etc. Whole-grain cereals with skim or soy milk is a personal favorite. Eggs whites made with olive oil instead of vegetable oil is a much healthier alternative. There’s also oatmeal, yogurts, and even protein shakes. These are just a few ideas on how you can start eating well.

Eating Well For Lunch

Lunch doesn’t have to be all about fast food and diners. For some of us, our lunch can be comparable to the amount that we eat for dinner. Still, there are much healthier options at a fraction of a cost. A fresh salad with your favorite fruits or even some fish is packed with essential vitamins that can give you the energy you need to help take on the rest of the day without feeling weighed down with “empty” calories. Also, a whole-wheat wrap with turkey, lettuce, tomato and some light dressing is much healthier for you than any SubWay sandwich. A freshly made panini is also a valid choice as well for eating well.

Eating Well For Dinner

The last meal that we eat should be the healthiest. After dinner, physical activity is generally at a minimum and most of us are probably gonna kick back and relax a little bit, before calling it a night. While it is true that the body burns calories even while we sleep, it occurs at a much slower pace. Therefore, it would not be to our advantage to ingest large amounts of calories just before going to bed. Some healthier options for dinner include whole-wheat pasta with some shrimp and spinach tossed in can make for a very healthy and delicious dinner. Baked beans with rice is also a very healthy option as well. Even a serving of chicken soup can help give you the calories you need minus the excess fat and cholesterol.

My New iPad: A User’s Guide Book Review – No Starch Press Book

[ad_1]

Wallace Wang, best seller of My New Mac and My New iPhone for the No Starch Press publisher has written a new book detailing everything you need to know about the iPad in a book called “My New iPad: A User’s Guide.” No Starch Press provided a reviewer’s copy of “My New iPad: A User’s Guide” for this review.

“My New iPad: A User’s Guide” includes seven chapters including: basic training; customizing your iPad; getting on the Internet; sharing data with your iPad; video, music, and eBooks; organizing yourself and additional tips. Each chapter is small and comes in easily consumable chunks of information that can instantly help new users complete a certain task with easy to follow step by step instructions.

The first chapter called “Basic Training” teaches you how to turn on and off the iPad, what the various buttons and slides perform and how to use and customize the virtual keyboard. Apple changed the Screen Location Lock since the book was published so information has changed since the publish date resulting in incorrect information.

“Customizing Your iPad” is the second chapter that details how to customize your home screen, set the date and time, restoring and resetting your iPad and installing and uninstalling iPad apps.

The third chapter called “Getting on the Internet” shows how to use the email client and web browser called Safari including some intermediate information such as how to use bookmarks and automatically fill out forms with Safari.

If you do not know how to transfer content to your iPad, chapter four is perfect for you. “Sharing Data with Your iPad” shows how to synchronize with iTunes to transfer media such as photos, movies, TV shows and even podcasts. The chapter further goes on to show steps to synch your eBooks, Audio Books, Contacts, Appointments, Mail, Notes, Bookmarks and even iTunes University Courses. The book is light on how to actually configure Yahoo! or Google services with your iPad however.

The next chapter focuses on content consumption on the iPad and it titled “Video, Music and eBooks”. This chapter shows you how to watch your photos to listen to your music to watching YouTube videos.

Chapter six focuses on how to use the iPad to keep yourself organized using included iPad apps and is called “Organizing Yourself.”

Finally, the last chapter called “Additional Tips” provides some additional miscellaneous tips including how to update the iOS or use foreign languages. This last chapter also includes a section called “Best iPad Apps” which includes some good apps but is dated. To keep up with the best iPad apps, you should watch for articles that continually are updated such as the Gizmos for Geeks Favorite iPad Apps monthly updated list.

I started and finished “My New iPad: A User’s Guide” in one afternoon. The book is geared towards new users of not only the iPad device but of Apple’s iOS devices including iPod Touch and iPhones and definitely not towards advanced user’s of the iOS. For example, this book would be ideal for my parents since they have never used an iOS device, but I found the book way to simplistic to really become engaged.

The Two-Way Job Interview

[ad_1]

Much of the fear that comes from Job Interviews is rooted in the feeling of being on trial or judged by the people, or panel, that is conducting the interview however it should always be remembered that a job interview is a two-way process.

A job interview should not just be a one way diatribe of questions thrown at you, with you aiming to convince the prospective employer of your worth, it should involve questions and answers both ways. How are you to know that his a company that you wish to work for?

A job is a long term commitment of a large part of your waking time, deciding how this time should be spent can not be left to a panel of interviewers to decide but should be taken into your own hands. Take the time in the interview to establish the best points of your prospective employer so that you know that the fit is right for you.

There are a few key points that you may want to consider, aside from the pay scale.

What does the company social life look like?

Some companies put on extra events, socials, barbecues and sporting events for their employees. Sometimes this is based around membership of a social club, sometimes it comes mandated from head office.

Other companies have a working tradition of leaving work at work, clocking out at half five and not even thinking about work or your colleagues until you clock back in the following morning. These are entirely contradictory working cultures and it is important to work out which you would prefer.

What about overtime?

This is another factor that varies wildly between companies and between potential employees. You may want to work your 40 hour week and that’s it or you may be willing to work as many hours as they will pay you to work. Find out what is expected from you and what you would want to be offered from them.

Is there Room for Progression?

Would you be happy working this job for the rest of your career? If not then it is worth inquiring about the opportunities for internal progression that the company can offer you. If there’s a clear path to your career goal then this is a bonus but don’t forget to ask about some alternative routes such as internal or external training and qualifications. The company may be willing to support you or even pay for extra qualifications if it leads to them having a more productive employee and it certainly won’t hurt your chances of future promotion, either within the company or with another employer.

None of these factors should be a deal breaker, just as no one factor should decide which candidate they hire. Try to approach these subjects throughout the course of the interview rather than saving them for the inevitable section at the end. Having these interspersed throughout will turn the experience into more of a conversation and dialogue.

This has several advantages. It will make you feel more comfortable if you having a conversation rather than just responding to a series of questions. Being more comfortable and relaxed results in being more confident and always gives a positive impression to the interviewer.

It also gives the impression of being more proactive, rather than just reacting to the questions the interviewer can see that you are actively involved in the process and seeking information.

Perhaps most importantly, it can help you decide if it is actually somewhere that you wish to work.

How Do You Fix a Hangover?

[ad_1]

It has been estimated that 25 to 30 per cent of the general population are impervious to the hangover. What this means is that around one in four fortunate people don’t know how the rest of us feel after a big night out. Why this is so is a medical mystery. But medicine has found ways for those of us who are susceptible to the effects of a hangover to treat it and lessen its severity, leaving us with the ability to get on with the rest of our day.

What constitutes a hangover?

Those of us who should know better know that a hangover isn’t exactly subtle. The most obvious symptom is a throbbing headache, which as well as being unpleasant makes doing the simple everyday tasks difficult. Some people are also prone to vomiting, shaky hands and a general feeling of lethargy.

But one symptom that few tend to associate with a hangover is an inhibited ability to function cognitively. Those of us who’ve attempted to go to work or school after a night of drinking will testify that your ability to make decisions and absorb information is restricted. All of these symptoms are due to your body coming to terms with the fact that the alcohol in your system is slowly leaving you, releasing an unhealthy dose of toxins in its wake.

Is there a cure?

Unfortunately not. Once the hangover has taken hold, your only choice is to toughen up and ride it out. However, I have compiled a list of natural treatments that you can take while still intoxicated to help inhibit a hangover from occurring. So you can join that lucky quarter of the population who have no clue what it’s like to have their day ruined by excessive drinking.

The first and most effective supplement that you can take to fix a hangover is called L-Methionine. When taken, L-Methionine binds with alcohol to produce citric acid (harmless, found in fruit!). This is great, because it assists your body in filtering alcohol from your system – just remember to take this while still intoxicated – taking it the next day won’t have any effect!

Of course that’s not all. There are a number of other supplements you can take to fix a hangover – each one will bring you closer to joining that lucky 25% of the population who don’t ever experience this nasty feeling!

Stages of Play

[ad_1]

Children go through different stages of play as they grow and develop. Very young infants only have the ability to attend to one object at a time. Once an object is out of their sight, it is quickly forgotten. Infants play by themselves because they are so busy exploring and discovering their new world. Every new object or situation that is introduced is a new learning experience for the newborn. This very first stage of play is called “Solitary Play” or independent play. They are fully engaged in gathering information and storing it for further use. This stage of play lasts until some where around nine months. This is a very self centered time for the developing infant.

The second stage of play begins to ripen in slightly older children usually by the time a child is two years of age. “Parallel Play” is typical of this age child. This kind of play involves two or more children in the same room. They are interested in the same toys and both see the toy as belonging to them. Hence they maybe in the same area and play with similar toys, but they do not play together. They are playing along side each other simply because they are in the same area.

When children extend their knowledge and play experiences they move into “Associative Play”. In this stage, three and four year old children begin playing together but it is a loosely organized fashion. The more mature child soon emerges as the leader or organizer in this stage of play. They see themselves as capable and able to tell others what to do, the younger child seldom questions this authority that the more mature child has cultivated.

Finally the child expands into “Cooperative Play” somewhere between the ages of four or five. Cooperative play takes place between two or more children as they grow and develop socially and emotionally. In cooperative play, children exchange ideas about the game or the toy they are playing with at that moment in time. Rules tend to still be very loosely constructed, but children know who is playing which role in their game. Play may last only a few minutes or it may stretch out for longer periods of time. Gradually they learn to respect the property rights of others. This is a clue that they are gaining social skills; at this same time they begin to understand that they need permission to play with certain materials and certain people. They are also more willing to share their toys for the sake of the game. Communication about the play is the critical point of cooperative play.

It is important to note that children differ widely according to birth order within their own families. Boys and girls develop in different areas at different stages of their life, so there is never complete adherence to any of these exact ages. Not all children move through the stages at the same rate, because children who have more life experiences tend to emerge as leaders or organizers at younger ages. Confidence, shyness, and other personality traits factor into these stages of play.

8 Reasons to Avoid Extreme Sports

[ad_1]

People advertise extreme sport events and courses like it’s something safe and cool you want to do. Ha! But it’s not! It’s not like learning to play chess or watching a cool movie, not at all.

Here is why:

1. You can get injured or die.

It may sound very convincing that the rate of people who die in car accidents is higher than the rate of those who die from parachute jump. But no matter what stats they show you, the truth is one – you can die or at least get seriously injured when practicing extreme sports. It happens all the time.

And you know of course, those who don’t do such stupid things live forever.

2. It will cost you money.

Every extreme sport requires some equipment. For some sports like skateboarding it’s cheaper, for some like scuba diving it’s more expensive – but without exception, practicing extreme sports will cost some of your hard earned money.

Isn’t it much better idea to spend your money on fashion branded t-shirts or cool tech gadgets?

3. It takes time.

More often than not practicing an extreme sport requires you to go to a special place somewhere (water, mountain, hill). It takes time to get there, it takes time to practice, it takes time to get back home, it takes time to take rest. Sometimes the extreme sport can occupy all your free time.

Isn’t this sad? You could use this time for such great activities like playing video games instead.

4. Your career may suffer.

The extreme sport will not only occupy your time – it will occupy your brain too. You will think about it, about the good time, about the next good time you’ll do it. This often kills motivation at work and makes you only wait till the end of the work day.

It’s so much better to be a good employee, grow in career and get good stable salary!

5. You may fall in love.

There are two ways you may fall in love – first, you may, and most probably will, fall in love with the extreme sport you are doing. This is so bad because of the reason already mentioned. Second, you may fall in love with some of your partners, a trainer or instructor.

What an uncomfortable situation, it’s much better to stay in your comfort zone and avoid falling in love with crazy things.

6. You will feel bad at the times when you can’t practice.

You’ll miss your extreme sport when you are at work, when you are far away from appropriate place, when you have no time or money, when the weather is not good… You’ll miss it all the time. And missing something hurts, believe me.

Life is a lot more painless when you have nothing to miss and nothing to lose, isn’t it?

7. Your old friends will think you are crazy.

I bet they will. Imagine how they’ll look at you when you tell them you won’t join the Friday party because you have to raise up early and go to skydive. They’ll think you’re fool. Many of them will be bored when you excited tell them about your latest achievement in mountain biking. Some will even feel bad when you become more fit as a result of the extreme sport.

And just think a minute about the moment when you get some injury. “I told you so, I told you so!”.

8. You will lose interest in some regular activities

Practicing an extreme sport will brainwash you so much that you may stop being interested in some regular activities you enjoy now. It’s not just work. You will stop being interested in cool things like watching TV shows, playing video games, and even doing funny tests in Facebook.

Can you imagine this? Horrible!

Book Review: Computer Investigation by Elizabeth Bauchner

[ad_1]

Who is the target audience for this book?

Make no mistake. This book is not targeted for computer professionals. If you have a degree in Computer Science or just know a lot about computers, you won’t learn anything from this book. This book is targeted to children in the middle school age group, but it would also be a good introductory book for adults.

That said, what does the book talk about?

What is the science of computer forensics?

Computer forensics is a two-part process. First, data is retrieved and then the data is used. It is different from other forensic sciences because the data usually stands on its own and does not need to be interpreted.

What are the many duties of a computer forensics technician?

While doing their job, computer forensic specialists must preserve evidence, not introduce viruses or worms into a system, handle data properly, keep evidence within the chain of command, reduce the impact of the system’s analysis on any businesses affected, and make sure privileged information is not divulged.

Following those rules, computer forensic professionals find hidden files, swap files, and temp files used by the operating system and by applications. They access these files and protected and encrypted files, searching for information relevant to the case. They analyze the data found, especially in areas normally considered inaccessible. They perform an over all system analysis and list all relevant files. They provide an opinion of the system’s layout and who authored which files. They make notes of attempts to delete or protect files, and they provide expert testimony and/or consultation in court as needed.

The book gives definitions for commonly used words, or jargon, in the industry.

A hacker is someone who is really interested in a piece of technology and learns all possible about the technology.

A cracker is someone who uses their hacker knowledge for bad.

Hackers are white hat, and crackers are black hat hackers.

A phreaker was a person who scammed the telephone company to get free long-distance calls.

Spoofing is mimicking a website (or an email) so the receiver thinks the sender is someone else.

Phishing is trying to get information from people, like their user accounts and passwords, and social security numbers.

A virus is a program, attached to another program, that infects a system when the program is opened. The virus can’t do anything unless the program is opened and ran.

A worm is like a virus, but it can replicate itself without other programs being opened.

A Trojan horse is a program that pretends to be a different kind of program.

Denial of Service (DoS) is when a cracker tries to prevent a system from being accessible by its normal users.
